Well here they finally are. I am extremely proud of all of her hard work and effort that she has put into her transformation. Katie will be the first one to tell that that getting healthy and fit is a journey that makes consistency, dedication and support…but it also can be fun! When she first started TurboFire she LOVED it and she has become a official Turbo Girl. Her transformation was so impressive, she even got cast in the new TurboFire workouts that are coming out in 2012! She is also going to be featured in the new TurboFire infomercial! How cool is that?!?

She has decided to pay it forward and she became a coach, just like me, to help others who are struggling with their weight. She is extremely knowledgeable and great motivator. If you want to join our team, you can make Katie your coach by clicking here! You can also contact her through Facebook Here!

Here is Katie’s Amazing TurboFire Transformation Results as well as her journey to get healthy and fit in her own words!

We all have a common desire to wake up every day feeling fit, healthy, and enthusiastic about what lies ahead. Yet for so many people that reality seems incredibly unreachable. I can remember being in that overwhelming place, wondering if I would ever get back to that happy, energetic girl I once knew so well…

It wasn’t until I started my graduate program in teaching, that my lifestyle habits took a 180 degree turn. Instead of spending my free time “working out” and studying, I spent my free time “eating out” and studying. I met knew friends, with much different habits, and found myself slowly drifting away from my previously active lifestyle. It wasn’t long before my weight began to creep up, and my desire to hit the gym came to a screeching halt. Over and over again, I gave myself the excuse that I was too busy, too tired, and would start back up Monday. Well, two and a half years of “Mondays” came and went, and I found myself 40 pounds heavier, at 30% body fat, and waking up every day feeling anything but fit, healthy, or enthusiastic.

Ultimately, I decided that the seemingly unreachable goals that had haunted me for the past couple of years, would instead be reachable. I just had to find the right path! I started out my weight loss process by paying a ridiculous amount of money for a personal trainer. (I already knew how the ins and outs of physical fitness, but thought I needed someone else to hold me accountable.) While I did make progress in my time with the trainer, I never felt that spark or enthusiasm that I used to feel during exercise. Upon discussing my concerns with my boyfriend, who had been working out with P90X for over a year, I learned from him that BeachBody offered a variety of programs that could suit nearly every fitness need.

I quickly began my research and came upon Chalean Extreme. The program sounded incredible! I quickly called to cancel my personal training subscription and ordered the deluxe version of the program. Wow! The spark I had been looking for began to creep back up on me, and I was feeling better than ever! THEN, I realized that Chalene Johnson was the girl responsible for creating those amazing turbo kickboxing classes that I had fallen in love with over a decade ago.

I was beyond excited when Turbo Fire was released, and had voiced so much enthusiasm and curiosity about the program that I soon received it as a gift from my now fiancé! He has always been an excellent gift giver, but THIS was one of the best things he had ever given me…

I completed my first TurboFire workout with a huge grin across my face. This was EXACTLY what I had been looking for! I got excited every time I put in a new workout, and the same feelings of empowerment came rushing back to me. I loved the fast-paced choreography, amazing music mix, and Chalene’s ridiculously contagious energy. After reading about the science behind HIIT training, I was blown away by how such a short workout could drastically improve my cardiovascular endurance.

As I worked through this program, I noticed that the muscles I had been building through the Chalean Extreme program were becoming visible! I was leaning out, and for the first time in my life had definition in my obliques and abdominal wall. I LOVED the strength training workouts included, and also soon began using the weighted gloves during the turbo workouts. I began using the gloves on TurboFire 30 and worked my way up to the TurboFire 45 and 45EZ workouts by the end of the second phase. By the end of the 90 days, I was able to accomplish my goal of completing Fire 60 with the gloves on! That was an incredible feeling of accomplishment!

As a result of TurboFire, I went from a girl who had been hiding her figure in baggy clothes, back to the confident girl I used to be running around the beach in her bathing suit. I am finally back and better than ever at 125 pounds and 14% body fat! I feel like more of an athlete today than I did playing Varsity sports in high school!
TurbFire for me, made the unreachable, reachable….I now get to wake up every day the way every person deserves to…feeling fit, healthy, and ready to face the day with positive energy.
TurboFire was the workout I had been looking for….the one that got me excited to press “play” everyday. This is a workout that I will forever love, and forever recommend until my freckled face turns blue!

Simply put:
The BEST version of me has been given the opportunity to come out and play, all because I pressed play with TurboFire! There are not enough words to thank those responsible for that….

It seems to me that we constantly look for the best approaches to problems. That includes our health/fitness. If you have tried losing weight at some point in your life you have probably heard that you should do Cardio from one person and Weight training from another. Each have their benefits but is there one that is better than the other? Cardio or Weight Training?

As a P90Xer, I have learned the benefit of both weight training and cardio. I wouldn’t consider every dropping one completely. But I do believe that in order to become a more fit individual, you definitely need to include some sore of weight training into your exercise routine. There are many known benefits of weight training and I believe that it has gotten a bad stigma because of the bodybuilding world. Women jumped on the cardio junkie bandwagon of the 1980s because they were afraid that if they lifted weights that they would get bulky and too muscular. That isn’t the case. There is a time and a place for weight training in your fitness schedule as well as your cardio sessions.

Which Burns More Calories?

I can’t accross and interesting study that compared to the two. Here is what it said…

A strength training session in which you burn, say, 300 calories burns more calories than a cardio session where you burn 300 calories on the treadmill. Impossible? No it’s not. At least, if you take into account the raised calorie burning after training.

Yes, we’re talking about elevated post-exercise oxygen consumption, or EPOC: the phenomenon whereby your body burns more oxygen, and therefore also more calories, after a training session. Sports scientists only started studying this effect in the nineties, but the results of their research indicate that, for people who want to control their weight, strength training is a good alternative to endurance and cardio training.

This is also known as the After Burn effect. A idea where your body continues to burn calories much further beyond your workout. As a matter of fact, this effect has been shown to be seen in HIIT versions of cardio as well. TurboFire is even based on this effect. This makes logical sense though. After you break down the muscle your body needs to repair. This causes many things to happen with your body in order to do that, thus causing your body to take calories and use them to repair muscle.

How Does This Work?

In 2005 researchers at Shippensburg University in the US published the results of a human study in the European Journal of Applied Physiology. For this they had got eight women, average age 31, to undergo two training sessions. On one occasion the women did weight training [CT]. They did three sets of leg-presses, knee-extensions, leg-curls, biceps-curls, triceps-extensions and bench presses with 65 percent of the weight at which they could just manage one rep. Between each set the women rested for 30 seconds, and after each exercise for two minutes.

On the other occasion the women ran on a treadmill. The researchers increased the intensity slightly every three minutes until the women were running at 85 percent of their maximal heart rate [TM]. The women stopped running when they had burned as many calories as they had done during the strength training session.

During the first hour after each training session the researchers measured how much oxygen [and therefore calories] the women burned. In the first hour after both training sessions the women’s oxygen expenditure was higher than before the training session. In the first half hour, oxygen expenditure was significantly higher after the CT training than after the TM training.

The respiratory exchange ration [RER], this is the ratio between inhaled and exhaled oxygen, is what is responsible. The lower the RER, the more calories you burn from fat and the fewer from carbs. So the women derived most of the energy for their EPOC after the strength training session from fat.

The researchers suspect that strength training uses relatively large amounts of energy that does not come directly from combustion processes, and which are therefore not visible if you just measure oxygen use during a training session. Restoration of the unnoticed energy reserves only shows up, in terms of oxygen expenditure, after the training session.

Pretty interesting findings right? This shows that strength training does have an added benefit, and why most extremely fit people train with weights. Of course it depends on what your goals are and what look you are going for. I do believe that everyone, even endurance runners, could benefit from some sort of weight training.

A program like P90X takes this concept and adds muscle confusion to it so you can continue to make your muscle guess, so you can continue to get stronger and see greater results. Weight training is an essential part of this. The pace of P90X also makes this workout burn up to 600-800 calories. It’s a fast paced workout that will give you all the benefits of weight training with the heart rats of cardio. This is why it has worked for countless numbers of people, including me!

Should I Add Weight Training?

In my humble opinion, yes you should. We all know that cardio burns calories and is great for shedding body fat. But weight training does as well and that’s why you should definitely have BOTH in your routine! There is a reason why P90X2 doesn’t have a true cardio workout. P90X2 is the cutting edge of fitness and is going to blow people away. They have taken this concept and created an amazing program. But even Tony Horton does cardio as well. On the flip side, Insanity’s Shaun T (Mr. Crazy Cardio himself) saw the benefits of weight training by adding in a Strength workout into Asylum. TurboFire has a resistance workout for this reason too! You have to include a resistance workout into your fitness program to see the greatest results for your efforts. So, don’t just choose sides. Have both Weight training and Cardio in your fitness schedule. You will see great results from the added benefits of both!

The biggest news from Chalene’s announcement was that my Fiance and fellow Coach, Katie made the Cast of the New TurboFire Workouts! I am extremely proud of her. She has had an incredible transformation and has devoted her time to helping others change their lives through TurboFire, Shakeology and other beachbody programs. I will post her transformation pictures later this week so you can see for yourself. Trust me, you will want to see these…amazing! If you want to make Katie your coach for FREE CLICK HERE!

There isn’t a lot of info about these new workouts yet but Chalene did say that these new TurboFire workouts are not going to be a TurboFire 2. Instead they are going to be additional workouts that will be the “best of the best” of what you know and love about TurboFire. There will be an emphasis on the HIIT workouts it seems as well. If you want to see what Chalene said about it herself, check out the video Below (the announcement comes around the 34 min mark):

Summer is here and that means it’s usually time to travel, vacation and take some time to see the world. So I have been getting asked about how people can stay fit and healthy on the road while they travel. I had the opportunity to put myself through this test recently when I took a mini trip down to San Diego for a weekend. I found that it was not only fun to discover creative ways to stay fit but I actually realized that I was being even more active than I was during my regular schedule.

Exercise on the Road

I like to exercise, so I like to find the time during my travels to exercise when I can. Getting a good, quick workout in also allows me to mentally relax when I want to have a cheat meal while on vacation. Besides, it wouldn’t be a vacation without some indulgences. Luckily for me, my fiance feels the same way so we are able to workout together. There are several things you can do to get a quick workout in.

1. Hit the hotel fitness center. Most hotels have a fitness center in the hotel. If your not sure you can always plan ahead and see if the hotel has one before you book it. This is one of the things I look for when I book a hotel. They are typically very small but usually will have some dumbbells and a couple machines, and a pull up bar. My fellow P90Xers will know that this is plenty to get a solid workout in. You can easily make a quick intense workout up on the fly or bring your workout sheet from P90X and do a full routine from a gym.

2. Bring your workout DVDs and workout in the room. My fiance brought her portable DVD player with us on the trip and brought TurboFire. She also brought a resistance band. She took it down to the hotel gym with me but she could have easily worked out in the hotel room. Don’t have a portable DVD player? Bring your laptop or buy the P90X app when it comes out later this summer. The easiest way to travel with P90X, Insanity, or TurboFire is to bring them with you and pop them into a DVD Player. For P90X, bring a resistance band. Even if you normally don’t use bands you will be surprised how well they will work. The new P90X2 will have a modifier using only bands for each workout. That means you will be able to take P90X2 on the road with you and do every workout with the resistance bands…how cool is that?

3. Be Creative with your Cardio. If you only have 20-30 mins because you’re with your family or you have a meeting you have to be at, then that’s all you need. Bring your running shoes and get creative. Go outside and run, jump, crawl, sprint, what ever! A great way to get a quick workout in is to do a HIIT workout, or High Intensity Interval Training. Warm up for 2-3 mins, then go all out for 30 secs, rest for 1 min and repeat 8-10 times. Do a quick cool down and you have a great 20-30 min workout. For example, my fiance and I were looking out of the hotel window and noticed a very long/high stairs across the street at the convention center (see picture). I suggested that it might be fun to do a workout on those things. So that next morning we went out and created a workout on the fly. We did a quick 2 min jog to warm up. We then did a “Suicide Drills” type of workout by going up 1 fight of stairs then back down, going up 2 flights then back down, then 3 and so on. When we got to top we just reversed it. 25 mins later we were done.

4. Plan activities that are based around being active. Ok I know, you want to relax and hang by the pool. That is fine but what about planning an activity that involves being active with you and your family? Rent some bikes and go on a bike ride around the area, learn to surf if your around a beach, paddle board or kyack if your around a bay or lake. Tennis courts near by? Rent some rackets and go play tennis. There are many activities you can do that involve being active around hotels. Even just taking a long walk around the area is plenty. The more active you are the more fit you will be on your trip. Besides, this is why we workout isn’t it? So we can be active in our everyday lives! Go swim, snorkel, bike, play! For example: My finance and I went and rented bikes and rode for about an hour checking out the area and seeing the sites. The next day we rented paddle boards and paddled around mission bay.

We all want to relax on vacation but being active can be just as fun. I was able to workout, lay by the pool, go for a bike ride, walk around town, paddle board all within a couple of days. Because I was so active I didn’t care if I ate some cheat meals. I came back from the weekend weighting less than when I left. Funny how that works. You can be active on the road, just take the time and plan ahead a little. Go have fun!

I will be posting about nutrition while on vacation in the coming weeks.

Do you like to be active while on your trips or do you like to do as little as possible? Do you think these ideas above would work for you?
