You have completed P90X and got ripped. Did rounds of P90X2 and took your athleticism to new heights. You even took on the P90X3 accelerated challenge and came out on top. What now? What could possibly challenge this time? I have you answer.. the Ultimate P90X / P90X2 / P90X3 Hybrid Schedule. I took my years of experience doing P90X as well as what I have learned as a P90X trainer and have compiled, what I believe to be, the best hybrid schedule that I could create. If you are familiar with my style of hybrids, you will see that I have again included a MISC day so that you can pick and choose what you want to do to fit your own personal fitness goals. You will also see that there is no recovery week in this schedule…instead there is “BRING IT” week. This is the week that you will take what you have done in the previous and apply it as much as you can to those workouts. This schedule is not for a the novice or beginner. I recommend that you have completed at least 2 if not all of these programs individually before you start this schedule. 2 rounds of P90X3 doesn’t count. Check out the schedule below and as always, ask questions in the comments and give me your feedback.

What You Will Need

P90X

P90X2 Base Kit or Deluxe/Ultimate Kit

P90X2 advanced DVDS (these come with Deluxe/Ultimate Kits)

P90X3

P90X3 Advanced DVDS (these come with Deluxe/Ultimate Kits)

What To Expect

No Recovery week: This schedule is meant for those who have already completed P90X, P90X2 and P90X3. I DO NOT RECOMMEND doing a P90X/P90X2/P90X3 Hybrid till after you complete AT LEAST 2/3 of the P90X programs.

An emphasis on Resistance Training. Most P90Xers like building muscle and getting stronger. This is sset up so there will be an emphasis on these workouts in particular.

A Miscellaneous day. There will be 1 day per week that you can do what ever you prefer. I have recommended what you should choose based on category… Strength or Conditioning.

A “BRING IT” Week. This is where P90X3 workouts come into play. You will be doing 2 P90X3 workouts each day which will increase the intensity of this week over the previous. Be sure to eat well and get plenty of rest.

Little Rest days. This means that your body is telling you that you need to rest you can and SHOULD take extra rest days. This is a tough schedule. You will need to get plenty of sleep and be eating well to fuel your workouts.

Now that most of my Get Ripped At Home X2 Crew has finished P90X2 classic schedule they are looking to hybrid it with P90X. I decided to write up a P90X/P90X2 schedule that will incorporate a P90X2 graduates needs, while getting in almost every workout that is offered. There are so many great workouts in both programs that there are literally dozens of different ways to put together a hybrid of P90X and P90X2. It has taken some careful thought to be able to put a hybrid schedule together that incorporates enough rest/recovery as well as focus on both P90X strength and P90X2 performance. As you will see, there will be some flexibility is what workouts you want to do based on what you want to specialize in during your round (Performance vs Strength).

What You Will Need

P90X

P90X2 Base Kit or Deluxe/Ultimate Kit

P90X2 advanced DVDS (these come with Deluxe/Ultimate Kits)

What To Expect

No foundation phase: This schedule is meant for those who have already completed P90X2. I DO NOT RECOMMEND doing a P90X/P90X2 Hybrid till after you complete the P90X2 Program.

An emphasis on Strength. Most P90Xers like the strength phase so there will be an emphasis on these workouts in particular.

A Miscellaneous day. There will be 1 day per week that you can do what ever you prefer. Cardio, PAP, X2 Total Body, or Chest X 2.0

A flexible schedule macrocycle (phase) length. Each phase can be done for 3-4 weeks. For purposes of keeping it to 90 days, I will only be showing a 3 week schedule for each phase

We sat through lectures, got hands on training, and also got to do a workout with Tony Horton (which was an ass kicker). The 2 days flew by and before we knew it we had to pass both a written and practical exam. It was a ton of fun learning all things P90X for the whole weekend and sharing that experience with others who felt the same way.

I found out last night that I officially passed and received this message in my email:
“The P90X Certification Team is pleased to announce that you have passed the P90X Certification written and practical exam! Congratulations on being one of the first to become P90X Certified.”

What this means for all of you is that I am now officially a Certified P90X Professional that can teach P90X One on One, in classes, gyms, and fit clubs. The greatest part though is the new knowledge learned. I can now customize P90X specifically for each goal type. Gaining Mass (Hypertrophy), getting lean, lowing body fat, overall fitness, cardio endurance, etc. I can also help you with your nutrition in more depth as well as be able to modify each move that you are presently struggling with. I now know the science behind the idea of Muscle Confusion, periodation training, and why each week is scheduled the way it is. That also means I can develop better hybrids based on this science as well. The P90X Certification was a “masters” course into P90X and I loved it.

I have been a believer in P90X since the first workout I did back in 2009. This made me even a bigger believer in the whole system and how it has worked for thousands of other people. P90X will truly help you take your health/fitness to the next level. If you would like help with P90X, as a P90X Certified professional, I am now 100% qualified to give you the advise you deserve.

Troy’s fitness journey isn’t a likely one. Troy was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at the age of 17. He decided that once he got well he was going to take his life back…and he did. Troy was lucky enough to be introduced to P90X from a friend. He used P90X, P90X+, Insanity and Asylum to get himself back into unbelievable shape! He focused a ton on his nutrition and truly changed his health and fitness.

Here is Troy’s Incredible story in his own words…

In November of 2009, at 17, I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Prior to getting sick, I was a very active and fit kid. I played many sports and never had a need to go to the gym or to work out at all. After a month of chemotherapy and radiation I had lost 10 pounds of muscle mass. After 6 months, I was down 40 pounds. My hockey season playing weight was a lean 180 lbs, I was currently 140. My self esteem was incredibly low, I avoided mirrors and going out in public; something had to be done.

For Christmas in 2010, a friend of mine got P90X as a gift and asked if I would join him to workout. I can’t remember what my original ‘fit-test’ results were, but I know my push ups started in the single digits. The first 90 days were an incredible challenge, but by the time April rolled around I was starting to get my normal body back.

Round 2 was a hybrid with many Beachbody videos. Some P90X+, some 1 on 1′s and Shaun T’s Insanity and Asylum. I saw very noticeable gains in my body composition and fitness levels. By the time summer was over, I was confident in my own skin again. During Round 3, I focused a lot on nutrition and started to eat very clean. I also paid a lot more attention to form on exercises and tempo. This round was purely P90X and was an effort to get me ready for the soon-to-be-released P90X2.

With P90X2, I have employed a carb-cycling technique to my diet, which has been incredibly effective (dropping my BF% to 7) and have really tried to strengthen my lower body and increase my balance and coordination. I still feel as if my fitness journey has only just started and every day I see more room for growth.

My motivation along the way was just to get back to my old self. Once I reach that point, I was hooked and wanted to see more and more improvement. Fitness and nutrition has become a huge part of my life and that is solely because of Beachbody.

If you think you can’t completely change your health and fitness with a Home workout program, think again. Nick was out of shape, eating terribly and feeling the effects in his life. Once he decided to change his life and stop making excuses there was no stopping him. He committed himself to a healthy diet and got results. Then he commited to P90X and got INSANE results. P90X, Insanity, Asylum and lots of sweat later, he is a transformed person. Living his life the way he chooses, healthy and fit. A true Get Ripped At Home inspiration. But he hasn’t stopped there…

Here is Nicks story in his own words:

Those first pictures are from my high school days (circa 2002-2004). Between my junior and senior years of high school, I went from 240LBS to 190 LBS following the Atkins’ Diet (ALL meat, cheese, eggs, and fattening foods). It worked for me, but in retrospect was not the healthiest way to make it happen. Anyway, after high school I went to college and my weight fluctuated between 185-200LBS. After I graduated college, I cut down to 175lbs by eating “healthy” and lifting and doing cardio at the gym. My 175 body was still 20% body fat… I was eating about 16-1800 calories per day (not nearly enough), and much of it was frozen or processed “diet foods”.

Then I discovered P90X. April 2009. Best decision ever. I followed the first round to a T, dropping about 10LBS (from 172-162) and from 20% body fat to around 8%. I was counting every single calorie, and every single macronutrient… but again, in retrospect, my diet lacked MICROnutrients. After my first round of P90X, I started P90X plus, but mobilized a rib and couldn’t lift my arm for about 3 months… I took it a little too easy. I gained some chub back (I was trying the paleo diet), and lost a little muscle. To get back into shape, I did another round of P90X. I finished that round at 170 (the weight I was when I first started P90X, and about 7% body fat (so I gained almost ten pounds, most of it muscle!). After that, I did a round of Insanity. I actually GAINED weight doing Insanity, but lost body fat %. My legs got stronger. Then I did Asylum, and that’s when my diet really started to shift. Asylum recommended cutting out dairy, so I did it, and I’ve never looked back. Asylum got me shredded (that video shows me right after my round of asylum). Then I decided that i wanted to add some mass. I ordered some P90X 1-on-1s and started lifting very heavy, increasing my caloric intake to about 3000 per day. All the while, I continued to tweak my diet, aiming for the highest number of “nutrients per calorie” (nutrients per calorie has since become my mantra whenever people ask me about my diet). It’s not about being Vegan, or not eating meat, or whatever… it’s all about getting the most nutrients per calorie. That’s all that matters. Why? So I don’t have to count calories. So I feel Energized. So I can eat AS MUCH AS I WANT!… and I do eat more than anyone I know. So that brings us to today, Week 6, Day 1 of P90X2. I’m between 172-175 pounds, roughly 8-9% body fat. I don’t count calories. I work hard when I work. And I have fun feeling good and mentoring other people when it comes to health and fitness. I work at Shelton’s Farm Market (my family owned business since 1947) where I oversee the implementation of “Healthful Options” including organics, natural foods, and foods for people with specific dietary needs. I’m also our resident Fruit Peddler. In addition to working at the Market, I am a Personal Trainer at the YMCA, where I work with a multitude of clients, ranging from 10 year old kids to 38 year old 300+ women. Being able to empathize with an overweight person is something that sets me apart from many of the other trainers I know, and I’m happy and proud to have come so far over the past 10 years. Whewwwww!!!! p.s. Here is my first P90X video (parts of it even made it into the P90X infomercial!)

I think Chad has answered the question whether or not you can gain mass with P90X. Wow! Chad decided to make a change in his life and went for it. His P90X results prove how you can completely change your body type with a program like this. Not only that but he also improved in sports! Chad has been a stable member or the Get Ripped At Home Crew for some time now and his dedication to both his fitness and nutrition definitely shows through. It doesn’t matter if you are young, old, man or women…you can get in the best shape of your life with P90X and P90X2. Get the results you deserve!

Here is Chad’s Story in his own words…

Entering high school as an underweight, unfocused, out-of-shape freshman, I knew that in order to play lacrosse competitively and succeed academically in school, I had no choice but to make profound changes in my diet and exercise regimen. I remember when my own poor diet affected my daily life, making me feel tired, weak, lazy, and irritable, especially before lacrosse practice; that chips and pizza might be the culprits never crossed my mind. Before, my daily diet included a meager breakfast, pizza for lunch, three bags of chips for a snack, and finally, a well-balanced dinner too late in the day to matter. After learning how proper nutrition could change my life, I changed my diet to include a hearty breakfast of eggs, bacon, and toast, I stopped eating the cafeteria junk food and started making my own lunches, and I put a stop to my destructive snacking habits. After I changed my diet, I wasn’t drained of all my energy when school ended; and, I also saw a major improvement in my lacrosse game.

Even though I had improved my diet, I still needed to get in shape in order to stay healthy and ultimately make the lacrosse team. I knew in order to play lacrosse effectively I would have to gain muscle, so I started working out at the gym and lifting weights. At first I did gain some muscle and increase my weight, but my gains stopped after a while and I didn’t know why. I researched and found that my body had entered the “plateau effect,” achieving results early on but slowing progress after about three weeks. After discussing the problem with my dad, he explained how P90X stops the plateau effect and helps achieve results more quickly. Convinced, I started to see results as the workout program put my body through varying workouts every three weeks so that my muscles kept growing throughout the ninety day challenge. By the end of the ninety day program, I gained considerable muscle mass, but more importantly; I gained confidence from a well-tuned, high-performing body fueled by healthful eating and regular workouts.

In case you have been living under a rock these last couple months, you might not have heard that there is a brand new sequel to P90X coming out this called P90X2. P90X2 is a fitness program designed for those who are already in decent shape, that are looking to take their health and fitness to a whole new level. There are many similarities between P90X and P90X2, but there are also some key differences. Since I feel like a P90X expert now (after 9 rounds) and a P90X2 cast member (Chest/Back + Balance and V-Sculpt), I can offer a unique perspective. I am a P90X disciple so it would be extremely hard for me to give up that schedule and workouts for anything else. I can say though that P90X2 is going to be a next step in sports science and I am very happy to jump aboard. P90X got me a crazy transformation and completely changed my physical appearance, where P90X2 will take that base and increase my athletic performance, agility, speed, strength and power.

But you don’t have to hear it from me. Hear it from the man himself, Tony Horton, the creator of P90X and P90X2. Check out his take on P90X vs P90X2

What Are the Differences between P90X vs P90X?

As you can see the main difference is Post-Activation Potentiation or PAP for short. This is the forefront of sports science and P90X2 is bringing it (no pun intended) straight to your home. Not only can you Get Ripped At Home but you will be able to perform like an athlete as well. As Tony Horton says it perfectly “Indoor training for the Outside World”.

Another major difference is Flexibility. In P90X you use muscle confusion with a set amount of weeks in order to get results. With P90X2 you will be doing a flexible range during each phase so you can focus on your personal goals. If you want more core emphesis, then do more of the “Foundation” phase…if you want more Strength then do more of the “Strength” phase…the same goes for the “Performance” phase.

P90X2 as a “heavier” workout than P90X. Meaning you will be working out harder for the same or shorter amount of time. You will need more time for recovery, so the workout schedule consist of 5 days per week, with a “Active” day 6. The 6th day is so you can go out there and play sports, ride a bike, surf, skit, play tennis, golf, go for a hike, etc. It’s your misc day to be active and enjoy your new level of fitness with your favorite active hobby/pastime. There are also now 12 regular all new workouts in P90X2, plus 2 additional “extreme workouts”. That’s 14 workouts in all.

For all you Yoga fans/haters out there….P90X2 Yoga is only 60 minutes. I know some of you are happy about that one.

That’s not all though. The nutrition plan from P90X is now changed. The new P90X2 nutrition plan consists of new recipes, new research from health science and even has Vegan and Grain Free versions. You can find out more about the P90X2 Nutrition guide HERE.

Yes there are even new cast members, like me, and other coaches as well. There are new jokes, personalities and music as well. Tony Horton still brings his same enthusiasm and comedy to P90X2 as well. Think of it like the newest version of the iPhone….same great feel with brand new upgraded features.

What do you think about the differences between P90X vs P90X2?

You have seen the infomercial and the stories online but you wonder, how did these people get the results that they did? As a Beachbody and P90X coach I am here to help. I have comprised 5 simple rules for you to get the most out of P90X so you can get in the best shape of your life. Remember, results can vary but if you follow these below you will get most out of this incredible program.

P90X Rules of Success:

1. Nutrition: I listed nutrition number one because I believe that it is the most important. In my opinion getting extreme results comes from 80% nutrition and 20% intense workouts. P90X supplies both. The nutrition guide that comes with the program is an incredible blueprint for getting results. It provides the amount of calories you need, A 3 phase nutrition plan, the foods you should eat, when you should eat them, recipes for meals, and the ratios of protein/carbohydrates/fats you should eat based on what your goals happen to be. Eating the right amount of calories, with the right proteins/fats/carbs/veggies/fruits/snacks at the right times is a key factor in getting the results your after. All you have to do is read and follow the guide. But you still have questions? That’s where I come in. As an Independent Beachbody coach I am here to help you, all you have to do is sign up to receive help CLICK HERE to sign up for free.

2. Having the Proper Equipement: P90X doesn’t need a lot of equipement. All you need is a Pull-up Bar , Weights and/or Resistance Bands. The most important thing is the have the right amount of Weight/Resistance! Far to often I get emails from my team members that are using 10 lb or 20lb dumbbells for the whole program. This isn’t going to be enough to get the best results. Different muscle groups require different amounts of resistance in order to get stronger. Your back is stronger than your biceps for example. P90X will get make you stronger. You will need to progress the amount of resistance you use as your strength increases in order to get the best results.

What do I use? I use both Adjustable dumbbells and resistance bands. Adjustable dumbbells are a great way to save money and space. Some of the most popular are Bowflex Select Tech and Power Blocks. If you can’t afford the free weights then Resistance bands are for you! Make sure you get at least 2 tensions. The Super and Extreme kits can be found in the “Gear” section.

3. Proper Supplements: You have gotten your nutrition down and now you need the right supplements. Fortunately P90X and Beachbody provide all the supplements that you need to get the best results. Whey Protein, P90X recovery drink (post workout), Shakeology, P90X Multivitamin, P90X protein bars, Omega 3s are all supplements to consider. They are all made specifically for P90X by nutritionist such as Mark Sisson and Steve Edwards. Optional supplements would be Creatine or a pre-workout supplement like Xpand Xtreme Pump. If you are wondering more about these see the supplement section or read “My Current Supplements“. I will be updating my supplements page very soon.

4. Consistency/Dedication: When you start P90X you are committing to a 90 day program. You must follow the schedule and be consistent with both the workouts and your nutrition to get the greatest results. A great way to do this is to set goals. Set 30, 60, and 90 day goals. Whether it be being able to do 10 pull ups, losing 30lbs, or gaining 10, setting goals will help you stay on the path to success. A great way to hold yourself accountable is to use the P90X workout sheets . As for nutrition A tool that I use is called FitDay, a food logging website which allows you to keep track of the amount of calories, as well as the % of protein/carbs/fat you take in daily. Will it be tough at first? Yes. Will there be days you don’t want to workout? Yes. But each day you do the program you take one step closer to your ultimate health and fitness goal. Remember I am here to help you through this. Make sure you reach out to me for motivation and help.

Optional equipment would also be, Heart Rate Monitor, Push Up Bars, Exercise Mat, and Yoga Block. Each can help you get even more from the program.

5. Having a P90X Coach: The P90X community is one of the greatest health and fitness communities around. When I first started P90X I found a coach that got the results I was after and signed up with him. He helped me Tremendously. Any question I had he was there to help. After I saw great results using the program I wanted to help others as well, so I signed up to be a P90X coach. As an Independent Beachbody Coach I am here to motivate, support, a help you reach your health and fitness goals. I have learned more from others than I have on my own.

Most of you who are going through P90X ask me what supplements I recommend. Shakeology is on the top of my list. When I started P90X back in January of 2009, I didn’t have Shakeology because it wasn’t created yet. Since it has been created I have been taking it and reaping the benefits. Both in my health and in my all around fitness. So I truly believe that if you really want to get extreme results with P90X, you should definitely do your self and body a favor and try Shakeology.

How do you incorporate Shakeology into the P90X diet guide though? Well, the good news is that the P90X diet guide has you eating a very healthy amount of food. As a matter of fact, when I first started P90X, the guide had me eating MORE calories than what I was eating before. P90X2 will incorporate Shakeology into the nutrition plan so you don’t have to worry about it, but in the mean time I found this great article by one of my favorite Fitness Experts, Steve Edwards. If you have read some of my other posts, you will know that this man knows his stuff. So if you have questions about Shakeology and P90X, here is all the info you need!

Can Shakeology replace one of my meals in the P90X nutrition plan?

I’d hope so, given that it’s a meal replacement shake! But seriously, Xers do have a different nutritional equation to consider than most other people do. Generally, meal replacement shakes are designed so you drink one of them instead of eating a meal to help you lose weight. Of course, Shakeology fits into this mold just fine. In fact, given how nutrient-dense it is, I’d say it’s better than anything on the market. And even though it contains an entire day’s worth of many nutrients, it’s still only 140 to 150 calories.

Aren’t most of the meals in the P90X nutrition plan in the 400 to 500 calorie range?

Exactly. And it won’t serve the average Xer well to cut out calories. This is because as you get fitter, your nutritional requirements change along with your body composition. When you first start to exercise, you can lose weight just by restricting your caloric intake. But as you gain muscle, you need to eat more to continue losing weight, and this is often a lot more than you ate when you first began losing weight—sometimes it’s more than double. If you eat too little during P90X, your weight loss can plateau, along with your ability to do the workouts.

This is why we give you a lot of smoothie recipes and options. Shakeology, like many other meal replacement shakes, can be a component of something larger. For meals, we suggest adding more calories from healthy fat sources, like nut butters (almonds, cashews, etc.), along with more standard smoothie-like ingredients, like fruit. Doing this not only brings your calories into line with your diet plan, but helps you balance your meals so they digest more slowly, like ordinary meals generally do.

I’m doing the portion approach in P90X. What block(s) could Shakeology replace?

The portion plan is basically little chunks of macronutrients portioned out to help you easily balance your diet. Shakeology is equal parts carbs and protein, with almost no fat. So Shakeology can replace one block of protein and one block of carbs.

Can Shakeology replace one of the snacks in the P90X nutrition plan?

Shakeology is an incredibly nutrient-rich snack, a perfect snack for Xers. Again, because it doesn’t have much fat, its nutrients are put to use very quickly by your body. This makes it an ideal pick-me-up snack when you’re on the go. It’s better, in fact, than a lot of energy drinks. While something like Red Bull® might give you more up-front punch, Shakeology will give you sustained energy because it’s providing nutrients your body needs to get things done, and it has a low glycemic impact, which helps keep blood sugar levels stable.

Shakeology’s macronutrient ratio splits the difference among sports drink, protein shake, and recovery drink, but it can substitute for any or all of them, because it also has an excellent micronutrient profile. Most people are focused only on macronutrients (proteins, fats, and carbs), but macronutrients are only part of your nutritional equation. Micronutrients are things like phytonutrients, adaptogens, and other scientific-sounding stuff. While we refer to these as “micro,” nutritionally, they’re anything but small. Many of them are absolutely essential for a healthy life. Shakeology speeds these micronutrients into your system, which enables you to perform better.

Why don’t we hear more about the importance of micronutrients?

Not to dwell too much on conspiracy theories, but “Big Food,” as we call the American food industry, doesn’t want us focusing on micronutrients because most of them have been destroyed in many of the foods we eat, killed by things like processing and pasteurization. These processed foods are then sprinkled with what have been lobbied to be “important” ingredients, but which in reality barely provide enough nutrition for basic survival, as opposed to thriving. As you can observe by watching the American population grow “larger,” this is leading to all sorts of problems.

In nature, of course, food doesn’t come packaged and processed and robbed of vital nutrients that make it good for us. It has a balance of nutrients that help sustain life. It’s possible for food scientists to recreate this balance in processed foods, but this is expensive. Essentially, if it doesn’t fit the numbers, shareholders don’t want to see it happen. So the Big Food corporations make cheap food and keep us in the dark about nutrition. This is exactly why we’re in the predicament we’re in today, with obesity and poor health, because it’s much cheaper to make calorie-rich, nutrient-poor food than it is to produce natural food.

This is why Shakeology has been designed the way it has. There isn’t any one food in nature that has all the micronutrients we need to fill the nutritional gaps in our diets—that’s why we need to eat a variety of foods. But most of us don’t do that. So at its core, this is what Shakeology is doing—filling in our nutritional gaps.

Can Shakeology substitute for P90X® Results and Recovery Formula®?

It’s not an exact swap, but you could do a lot worse. When you’re training very hard, like those times when your body is shaking—during, say, P90X Chest & Back—Results and Recovery Formula is better because your body is “bonking”; it’s essentially run out of glycogen, or blood sugar. Any time you’re in this state, the more quickly you can recharge your glycogen, the less damage you’ll do to your muscle cells, and the faster you’ll recover. It’s the one and only time sugar is a preferred nutrient in your diet.

Shakeology doesn’t have nearly as much sugar as Results and Recovery Formula does. Shakeology only has a little, for nutrient transport. But because Shakeology’s other ingredients also support your digestive processes, it helps you assimilate nutrients more rapidly. The latest science showing that a small amount of protein can “piggyback” on sugar, helping your body put the protein to use more rapidly, during or after exercise, holds true for Shakeology. It’s not as effective as a Results and Recovery Formula for your hardest workouts, but at any other time, it’s pretty darn good.

How’s Shakeology as a protein shake?

Shakeology has an ample amount of protein. While many protein shakes on the market may have more grams of protein, the type of protein they use often digests so slowly you can’t drink them when you’re active. Shakeology uses whey protein, which is one of the most (if not the most) bioavailable sources of protein. That means it absorbs more quickly into the system than other proteins do. Most proteins, especially when you get them in a whole food, take forever to digest. This means that eating protein right before, during, or right after exercise is generally a waste, because your body is using energy to digest something that won’t help you for hours, energy that it could be using to enhance your workout or recovery. But when you combine whey protein along with Shakeology’s other nutrients, you have a high-protein shake that can fit into many different nutritional slots in your day, something a standard protein drink can’t do.

Should I still bother taking P90X Peak Health Formula or ActiVit® multivitamins if I’m drinking Shakeology every day?

We get the vitamin question a lot, because Shakeology has so many vitamins in it already. However, using my previous example involving processed foods, on any given day, most of us only get a fraction of the nutrients we should be consuming, even when we’re eating more calories than we should. This is exactly why we have vitamin supplements in the first place. Throw exercise into the equation, which accelerates your body’s usage of nutrients, and you can see why we recommend so many times the recommended daily allowance* (RDA) for certain vitamins and minerals.

For an average person, Shakeology might eliminate the need for a multivitamin. But if you remember the movie Supersize Me, you may recall that the average American takes about 600 steps a day—which isn’t even your warm-up for a P90X workout! No one doing a Beachbody program is average. Xers, especially, are advised to take additional vitamin supplements.

It’s also great to take your supplements along with Shakeology because they’ll digest more easily with help from Shakeology’s digestive enzymes and whole-food sources of nutrients. One of the limiting factors with supplements is how well (or not so well) your body can assimilate them. Adding them to something you know your digestive system can break down easily is a plus.

It’s important to mention two other variables here as well. First, many—if not most—of our customers are trying to lose weight. This requires reducing caloric intake while adding exercise, which increases nutrient requirements. Starting to see an equation where multivitamins and supplements make sense? The body can be a complex organism, but this comes down to simple math. The key to losing weight isn’t just reducing calories; it’s also finding a way to reduce your caloric intake and still get enough nutrients to keep you body functioning at its highest level. To do this, you need to seek out nutrient-dense foods. As I said before, you’d be hard-pressed to find something else that’s as nutrient-dense as Shakeology.

Then there’s the RDA, which is the “recommended daily allowance” for everybody. Imagine one nutritional number for every person on the planet, from a 100-pound computer programmer who sits all day to a 350-pound NFL lineman. How absurd is that? Anybody who’s doing P90X is no longer an average individual. So chances are the RDA won’t fit the bill if you want your body to perform as well as it can.

When’s the best time to drink Shakeology during a P90X day?

One of the beautiful things about Shakeology is how versatile it is. Because it helps you digest anything you consume along with it, there isn’t really a wrong time to have it. Ideally, its best slot in an Xer’s day is as a pre-workout snack, taken about 1 hour prior to your warm-up. Then your workout will help you get the most out of Shakeology, and the Shakeology will help you during the latter part of your workout, especially if your glycogen stores have been depleted slightly. Shakeology can also be effective pre-workout, post-workout, or any time during the day when your energy’s flagging and you need a pick-me-up. Or you can make Shakeology smoothies and simply replace your meals. Basically, you can’t go wrong.

Is there anything else you’d like to add about Shakeology?

Price holds a lot of people back, and I can understand that on the surface, Shakeology might look expensive. We tend to look at foods in a cost-to-calorie ratio, instead of a cost-to-nutrient ratio. Sure, you can buy a Big Gulp® and you get 800 calories for a dollar (or something like that). But what good are they? There are no micronutrients. They’re full of man-made sugar, chemicals, and the by-products of genetically modified corn and soy production—no nutrition whatsoever. Whereas if you tried to assemble all the nutrients in Shakeology independently, you’d have to spend 40 bucks.

If you’re serious about your health, you should consider what you spend your money on. People drop 3 to 4 bucks a day on things that are a detriment to their health without batting an eye. We’re talking the retail price of a latte or a smoothie, or any number of things that are even less healthy. The consumer is essentially at war with a bunch of corporations that seem to be trying to poison them to make a quick buck. The obesity trend will only end when we take some responsibility for our health and begin to make better food choices.
